UPB Chancellor: Online classes in UPB, possible

by Derco Rosal

Due to the threat of Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19), the University of the Philippines Baguio (UPB)Cchancellor Raymundo Rovillos instructed the deans to plan for the possibility of holding online classes to ensure continuity and quality of lessons in case the mayor orders class suspension.

“I have instructed all the deans to meet the faculty and to try to think about the possibility of holding online classes and ensure continuity of lessons in the eventuality of a class suspension. That could be one scenario because it is already happening in Quezon City. So, if the virus spreads here in Baguio City, there is also a possibility that classes will be suspended,” Rovillos said.

“So ngayon ang instructions ko sa mga deans ay pagplanuhan nila kung ano ang maaaring gawin kung masuspinde ang mga classes nang hindi magsa-suffer ang learning ng mga estudyante,” he added.

He also said that the university is currently purchasing alcohols as they launch the alcohol stations within the campus.

“We are doing our best to secure [the university population]. Nagpu-purchase na kami ng maraming alcohol, magkakaroon ng alcohol stations,” he said. Rovillos further said that educational campaigns will also be done.

As a precautionary measure, the university also holds events and gatherings in open areas. “We have also instructed the deans to avoid big gatherings inside enclosed spaces like Teatro Amianan. Ililimit yung mga malalaking gatherings lalong lalo na kung mayroong mga ibang tagalabas,” he added.

As of now, the university still has no final statement regarding this public health concern but the faculty and staff will have a meeting tomorrow, March 11, to discuss and finalize a concrete plan.
