Magalong declares city-wide community quarantine

by Shanadine Doria

Mayor Benjamin Magalong formally declared a city-wide community quarantine in Baguio City today, March 16, under the Executive Order No. 065-2020.

The executive order also known as “An Executive Order Declaring the City of Baguio Under Community Quarantine” included provisions that tackle the city’s preventive measure to the rising case of COVID-19 in the Philippines.

Magalong emphasized that the city-wide quarantine is part of the local government’s aggressive actions to prevent the continuous rise of COVID-19 cases in the country.

“We cannot be spared because we have to understand that Baguio City is a tourist destination in the country, so we have to be more aggressive,” he said.

The EO also included the extended suspension of classes in all levels of private and public schools from March 16 to April 15.

Other provisions under the EO include aggressive management of checkpoint operations.

“Isang salient point dito is, we will now be more aggressive dito sa ating checkpoint operations, which is now being managed by the City Health Office together with our Philippine National Police, ” Magalong stated.

As a safety precaution, a curfew will also take place in the city from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

“It covers everyone except for people who have night schedules or work schedules. They will have to present their work documents,” Magalong said.

Magalong also stated that social gatherings such as parties, concerts, large assemblies and conferences will be disallowed.

He added that he is open to the possibility of city lockdown if there will be a detected community-wide transmission.

Magalong asked the people’s understanding with his declaration as it was done to ensure the Baguio residents' safety.

“Intindihin niyo po sana ang pagdeklara ni Mayor. Isang bagay lang po ang nasa isip niya, to make everyone safe and healthy... Let’s continue to pray to God,” he said.
